Lucio Fontana is rightly regarded as one of the most important Italian artists active in the twenty years after World War II, important not only in Italy but in a pan-European sense. It is, however, also important to remember additionally that he was born in Argentina, and spent quite important parts of his early career there, working first as an assistant to his father Luigi, a sculptor, then independently. After education in Italy, and service in World War I, the first period of his creative life,1922-1928, was spent in Argentina. He was back there during the war years, leaving Europe in 1939 and returning only in 1947.
